Barcelona could scupper Arsenal’s move for PSV Eindhoven’s Ibrahim Afellay by making a bid in the January transfer window after the in-demand midfielder revealed the two clubs may have opened talks.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger was confident of tying up a deal for Afellay despite late interest from Barca’s bitter rivals Real Madrid.
The Dutch international will be a free transfer in the summer and has no intention of signing a new deal with PSV. He is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.
Arsenal have been admirers for some time and after making a £7.5m offer last summer and believe they can get their man for free.
But Barca are attempting to get in first by offering the 24-year-old a deal at the Nou Camp and Wenger will not be pleased to hear Afellay’s latest comments.
Afellay told Spanish Sport newspaper: ‘I know nothing. I only know what I read in the newspapers online, but I still don’t know what my future holds because there are many options. But I think there have been contacts between Barcelona and PSV. (Daily Mail)
There is increased speculation that Barcelona are nearing the £4m capture of talented Dutch international Ibrahim Afellay in January but quite where the 24 year old PSV Eindhoven man will fit into Pep Guardiola’s attacking plans is something of a mystery.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have all been strongly linked with a move for the player who is due to be out of contract in the summer. The Eredivisie club is thought to be ready to cash in on Afellay in January rather than lose him for nothing, a decision that could scupper their dreams of a first Dutch title in three seasons.
