GK: Craig Gordon
DF: Phil Bardsley, Steven Caldwell, Danny Wilson, Stephen Crainey
MF: Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher, Barry Bannan, Kris Commons
FW: Jamie Mackey, Shaun Maloney
It is an experimental starting XI, because it has to be. Nine players pulled out of the squad due to injury, meaning that two players will earn their first ever caps from the start – Liverpool defender Danny Wilson and Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan.
Wilson is yet to earn a place in the Liverpool side, but won praise for his Rangers appearances last season domestically and in the UEFA Champions League, while Barry Bannan has been granted time on the pitch due to injuries to key men at Villa Park.
With nine uncapped players in the squad, Levein clearly intends to learn something from training sessions with some players he has yet to spend time with, and hopes that they will learn something alongside experienced names at Sunderland, Wigan, Blackpool, Manchester United, Derby and Celtic.
