Despite rumours in recent weeks linking Roma defender Philippe Mexes with a move to Arsenal this January, it has emerged that Chelsea are in fact front-runners for his signature. The Stamford Bridge club are set to offer the France international a lucrative contract in order for him to join when his current deal expires in six month’s time.
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is desperate to bring in defensive reinforcements, and has also been linked with a move for Bolton’s Gary Cahill. The Italian is a big admirer of Mexes though, and is rumoured to have tried to sign him on numerous occasions previously, when in charge at AC Milan.
Mexes is a commanding, no-nonsense central defender, and having had substantial experience in the Champions League and at international level, would represent an astute piece of business if Chelsea were able to land him on a free transfer.
