Roy Hodgson is hoping Joe Cole can return to his squad in time for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League clash at fellow top-four hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Liverpool’s No.10 has missed the last five games with hamstring trouble, but he is working hard at Melwood with the medical team in order to get back to full fitness.
“Joe should be back for Sunday,” Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv.
“We were hoping he would be back to face West Ham, but it has taken that little bit longer.
“Joe is not that far away really, so hopefully he will have recovered in time for Tottenham.
“Hamstring injuries are tricky and I’m afraid we can only rely on what the Sports Science people tell us, and if they say he needs more time we just have to wait.” (Liverpool Official Website)
With Steven Gerrard ruled out of action for up to four weeks due to the injury he sustained on England duty, Joe Cole’s return to fitness is excellent timing.
Raul Meireles is gradually winning over Liverpool fans with his all action performances in midfield, and though he is capable of playing in Gerrard’s usual position of just behind Fernando Torres, the likelihood is that the Portugal international will be deployed in central midfield – as he was in the 3-0 victory over West Ham.
Joe Cole would then get the chance to play the number 10 role his jersey represents, and this offers him the opportunity to prove his value to the Anfield faithful with a series of strong performances.
With Lucas returning from suspension for the Spurs game due to his red card against Stoke, and either he or Christian Poulsen will most likely play alongside Meireles in midfield.
Tottenham Hotspur will be confident after coming from two down to defeat Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday, and having finally got the monkey off their back of not winning away at the “Big Four” teams of Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in 68 attempts, the Reds will be in for a hard match.
If Cole shows what he can do though, and Liverpool help Glen Johnson out by doubling up against Gareth Bale, I’m confident we can get a result.
