CHELSEA and Manchester City are gearing up for a bidding war over Benfica’s Brazilian ace David Luiz.
The Portuguese champions need to raise funds after crashing out of the Champions League and hope to cash in with their £25million-rated star.
Central defender Luiz, 23, who also doubles up at left-back, has suffered a strained relationship with his Benfica bosses.
The star was unhappy after they rejected City’s summer bid.
Now Chelsea look set to move in during January’s transfer window following the long injury lay-offs to John Terry and Alex.
A Benfica insider said: “Going out of the Champions League affected our financial plans. We want to re-evaluate the situation.” (The Sun)
Given the injury concerns Carlo Ancelotti has with captain John Terry a move for Benfica centre back David Luiz seems all the more likely but now interest from Manchester City could end up dragging the west London club into a bidding war they may well not be able to win.
The Brazilian defender has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League and having seen his side fall eight points behind leaders Porto and dumped out of the Champions League a move seems all the more likely, especially as financial concerns may force the Portuguese giants to accept offers for the powerfully built former Vitoria player.
Will either mega rich club be willing to meet Benfica’s inflated £25m price tag though?
