Russia and not England will be popping the champagne corks on Thursday and be announced hosts for the 2018 World Cup.
At least that’s what the bookmakers think following the release of the latest odds following the BBC Panorama programme which focused on alleged corruption within FIFA. The Russian bid is now the odds-on favourite at 4/6 (1.66) with England drifting from second to third favourites now out to 3/1 (4.0).
“While the programme did not seem to suggest anything which would have a direct impact on England’s bid there may be a public backlash against the conditions imposed by FIFA which, it was suggested, the bid team is prepared to go along with,” said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe.
He added: “FIFA representatives may also not be that impressed by some of the allegations levelled against them.”
William Hill now make Russia 4/6 (1.66) favourites to host the 2018 World Cup, with Spain/Portugal 11/4 (3.75) second favourite, England 3/1 (4.0) third favourite and Belgium/Holland 16/1 (17.0) outsiders. (Goal.com)
So there you have it. You rarely see a poor bookie and these odds may well reflect just how unlikely it will be for England to win the race for the 2018 World Cup. They now even find themselves behind Spain/Portugal and there is one hell of a mountain to climb and one wonders if David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham can make up ground with some serious schmoozing in Zurich.
