Ajax will not stand in Jan Vertonghen’s way if he wants to move in January – but they remain confident he will stay until the summer at least.
Arsenal have tracked Vertonghen since last summer and remain keen on the defender, who can also operate in midfield.
Arsene Wenger recently claimed he will not strengthen his squad when the transfer window opens but with clubs in Germany and France also keen on the Belgian star, the Arsenal manager may be forced into a u-turn in order to ensure his top target does not slip through his fingers.
Vertonghen has scored three goals in 15 Eredivise appearances this season and his performances in the Dutch league have caught the eye of a string of European scouts, with Arsenal paying close attention to the 23-year-old.
talkSPORT has learned that Vertonghen wants to play in the Premier League but may wait until the summer before making the move to England.
But with Ajax ready to cash in on the £10million-rated star, Arsenal could have to make their move in January or at least secure a pre-contract agreement that would pave the way for his arrival at the end of the season. (TalkSPORT)
There has been a great deal of speculation doing the rounds about Arsene Wenger raiding Ajax to sign Thomas Vermaelen’s former club team-mate and current international defensive partner and this latest bit of news would add meat to the rumour that Arsenal are looking to sign talented youngster Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian international has been a key member of Ajax’s first team for the past three and a bit seasons but it seems that Martin Jol is having to make some tough decisions about some of his big names to help deal with financial problems the Amsterdam club is coming up against.
Arsene Wenger has stated that he is looking for further defensive options but has also stated that he does not believe he needs to make any moves in January so it may well suits all parties if a deal is agreed when the transfer window re-opens and then the north London club brings Vertonghen to the Emirates next summer.
