England missed out on the right to host the 2018 World Cup after football’s governing body Fifa picked Russia to stage the event for the first time.
Russia saw off rival bids from England, Spain-Portugal and Netherlands-Belgium to win a secret ballot of Fifa’s 22 executive members in Zurich.
England hoped Prince William, David Cameron and David Beckham would give them an advantage but the bid failed.
Meanwhile, Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup.
England’s bid was described as “excellent and remarkable” by Fifa president Sepp Blatter following Thursday’s final presentations.
But the executive committee opted against sending the 2018 tournament there for the first time since 1966.
BBC Sport understands England were eliminated in the first round of voting, with Russia earning a majority (12 votes) in round two.
“I’m obviously disappointed,” Beckham, who has 115 England caps, told BBC Radio 5 live. “Our bid team have done everything possible. We couldn’t have got a better bid together.
“We wish Qatar and Russia the very best. They’re two great countries and I’m sure they’ll make Fifa very proud.
“It’s hard not to come away with the World Cup in 2018. Lots of congratulations to the team. A lot of hard work has been done – the Prime Minister’s hard work, Prince William’s hard work.
“Apologies that we couldn’t bring the World Cup to our country because there’s no better and more passionate fans in the world than in England.
“It’s just disappointing that we can’t bring the World Cup to them in 2018.” (BBC Sport)
So there you have it. At one point it looked like England had it in the bag, the bookies were all saying they were favourites to win the race, then Beckham, Cameron and Prince William and co. put in a great presentation but then something happened. Something very fishy indeed. It appears that England may have even finished fourth out of four in the voting.
Some will say that the English media is to blame, some will say that FIFA stinks to high heaven. What do you think?
