Sir Alex Ferguson has reacted to uncertainty over Patrice Evra’s Manchester United future by targeting Benfica’s Portugal left back Fabio Coentrao.
Coentrao was lined up for a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, when Chelsea feared former boss Jose Mourinho was about to lure Ashley Cole to Real Madrid.
Cole stayed put, but Coentrao could be heading for the Barclays Premier League with Evra now in Mourinho’s sights for the problem left-back position at the Bernabeu.
Such is the concern within Old Trafford that Evra would find the Spanish giants hard to resist that Ferguson has already launched the hunt for a replacement.
Coentrao is prominent on the United manager’s shortlist after establishing himself as Portugal’s first-choice left back at just 22 and catching his eye during last summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
Coentrao, who can also operate as a winger, was an ever-present and one of the few Portugal players to impress as they bowed out to Spain in the last 16.
There were claims in Portugal last night that contact had already been made between the clubs, though a likely £20million asking price for a player whose contract has nearly six years to run may prove a stumbling block. (Daily Mail)
There has been a great deal of speculation that Patrice Evra is a very real target of Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho and some believe the French left back may look to force a move to the Bernabeu after four years at Old Trafford and with that in mind this source believes that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on highly rated Benfica full back Fabio Coentrao.
The young Portuguese international would be a very decent acquisition and the Benfica man has shown that he has the potential to become a big star and would jump at the chance of a move to the Premier League side and it seems only the small matter of a very inflated valuation would stand in the way of a possible signing.
Clearly Ferguson has a liking for Portuguese signings and may well ask for advice from former assistant Carlos Queiroz before making a move for the 22 year old if indeed Evra does make it clear he wants to join La Liga giants Real Madrid.
