Liverpool ‘in negotiations’ for Glen Johnson replacement
Liverpool – Roy Hodgson will make a move Rod Fanni as a replacement for Glen Johnson
Liverpool are set to follow up their interest in Rennes defender Rod Fanni but face competition from French league leaders Marseille, according to reports.
The club are currently looking for different options at right-back, with Glen Johnson out of form, and have been linked with Fanni earlier in the season and now, French media outlet RMC report it is now a two-horse race.
Johnson has criticised manager Hodgson’s style of play, slamming Liverpool as ‘boring’ recently, and has duly been linked with a reunion with former Reds boss Rafael Benitez at Inter Milan.
And Hodgson has responded by asking Liverpool’s new director of football strategy Damian Comolli to fly out to his homeland and start talks with Rennes over a possible transfer.
Comolli has some good contacts in France which Hodgson believes can benefit the club in the transfer market, with the likes of Yann M’Vila, Dimitri Payet and Blaise Matuidi having been linked with moves to Anfield recently.
And the ‘imposing full-back’ as he is known to Rennes supporters looks certain to leave Rennes after the club accepted an offer from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day last summer but the move eventually fell through.
And Liverpool believes they can negotiate for a cut price transfer due to his age, he turns 29 before the end of the year, and that would enable them to cash in on Johnson and have money left over to strengthen other positions at Anfield. (Give Me Football – Official PFA Website)
This is indeed interesting news, but does it make sense? Yes Glen Johnson has been pretty appalling this season and has also had a bit of a squabble with Roy Hodgson to boot but does it make sense to sign a 29 year old journeyman Frenchman as a replacement for an England international who cost the best part of £18m.
I thought NESV were all about bringing in youngsters with an eye to the future, so how does Rod Fanni fit into this plan? If we are going to sell Johnson lets hope we can get at least a fair chunk of the fee we paid for him because like him or not, he does have a lot to offer.
Perhaps we would be better off not buying the Rennes man and instead trusting to youth and start using Martin Kelly more regularly? I have been impressed by the mature performances from the 20 year old and perhaps the time has come to give our young lads more of a chance to prove themselves?
