Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Dinamo Zagreb’s teenage defender Sime Vrsaljko.
The Croatian club’s vice president Zdravko Mamic claimed last month they had rejected a £17m offer from Arsenal for Vrsaljko and his younger club mate Mateo Kovacic.
However, sources at the club now say Arsenal are close to reaching agreement on Vrsaljko which would see Arsene Wenger buy the 18-year-old right-back in January but loan him back until the end of the season. (Daily Mail)
This rumour has been in circulation for weeks now, and though it is generally not the Arsenal policy to comment on a transfer until it reaches completion, there may well be something in it.
Dinamo Zagreb’s president Zdravko Mamic said to Sportski Zurnal in November,
“Ten days ago we had a special visit in Zagreb.
“People from Arsenal came here and they were ready to pay €20 million in order to secure the services of Vrsaljko and Kovacic.
“But they are to stay in Dinamo, Arsenal just wanted to buy them for the future. But my answer was sharp, I said ‘no’ in one second.”
If the Daily Mail are correct, the club has come to an agreement with Dinamo at least for the transfer of Vrsaljko – because of an arrangement to loan back the player for the remainder of the season.
One can only speculate on a prospective fee, but given that Arsene Wenger was reportedly ready to pay €20m (just under £17m) for the full back and his 16 year-old club mate Kovacic, around £9m ought to secure the signature of the one of the most sought after young players in the world.
