IPSWICH boss Roy Keane believes £10million-rated teenager Connor Wickham has the potential to be the new Wayne Rooney.
Wickham, 17, is the Tractor Boys’ youngest-ever player and a target for Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool.
Keane said: “There aren’t many Connor Wickhams around. I have a figure in my head that we’d have to consider.
“The big teams wouldn’t be buying him for what he’s doing now. They’re going to buy him for his potential.
“United had to buy Rooney for £28million when he was 18.
“Can Connor be as good as him? I think he has that potential.” (The Sun)
It is quite clear what Roy Keane is trying to do here: raising the price tag of his player in the hope of opening a bidding war for his signature.
His intentions are understandable then, but the figure mentioned by Keane seems a bit steep to say the least.
In fact, even £10m, the figure conjured up by the media seems quite high.
Despite the comparisons, Connor Wickham is not Wayne Rooney, who had scored in the Premier League – and indeed England – at the age of 16.
Last season, Wickham scored 6 goals in 29 appearances – often from the bench – but this campaign has been disrupted by injury. The young Englishman is yet to open his tally despite playing a part in 15 matches so far.
Of course, that’s fine for a 17 year-old. He certainly has time on his side.
However, with the media desperate to hype up another new star, Wickham will have to keep his feet on the ground.
Wickham could well become an outstanding player at either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur, but until either Roy Hodgson or Harry Redknapp come calling, he would be best off focussing on his game at Ipswich Town.
To give those fans a glimpse of what he is be capable of already though, his is the second England U17 goal below in highlights of the 2010 European final against Spain.
