Arsenal are reportedly set to seal a double-deal for Dinamo Zagreb pair Sime Vrsaljko and Mateo Kovacic.
Earlier this week, Croatian daily Crveni Karton claimed Vrsaljko was on the verge of a £8 million move to north London but new developments – as reported by Index Sport – have suggested the 18-year-old won’t be the only player leaving Zagreb.
It is alleged that Zagreb vice-president Zdravko Mamic has claimed 16-year-old attacking midfielder Kovacic will also be joining Arsenal if a deal can be completed during the transfer window.
A deal for the talented duo would certainly represent a significant coup for the Gunners and would add to the famed stable of young talent at Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger has long been renowned for his ability to identify and develop teenage prodigies – with the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere testament to the talents of the Arsenal boss and his academy staff.
Wenger is understood to bring the cream of young European talent to the Emirates Stadium as he looks to leave a lasting legacy with Arsenal should he eventually leave the Gunners.
Arsenal have also been linked with Ipswich wonderkid Connor Wickham and Israeli sensation Omri Altman as Wenger continues to build a squad for the future. (Give Me Football – Official PFA Website)
The obvious response to the source’s article above would be “do Arsenal need more youth”. Arsene Wenger seems to have an inexhaustible supply of up and coming talent so many supporters appear to see the club bring in more established, experienced players to help populate a squad that has more balance.
The two Croatians named are reportedly players with great potential but clearly bidding such large sums for players with no top level experience is always something of a risk. Connor Wickham has stated his desire to move to Arsenal and there seems a very real possibility that Ipswich will lose the hotshot some time soon.
Maccabi Tel Aviv teenager Omri Altman has been favourably compared to fellow Israeli Yossi Benayoun and Arsenal will apparently go head to head with Liverpool for his signature.
Clearly it is financial sensible to adopt a policy of bringing players to the club at a young age as opposed to spending vast sums on big names but after five seasons without silverware Gunners supporters will be hoping the club puts some money into strengthening their squad.
