Man City’s on-loan defender Nedum Onuoha has been winning plaudits for his performances for Sunderland this season and may have caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Sunderland are desperate to make their season-long loan deal permanent in the summer but United boss Ferguson may have other ideas.
United are said to be in “transition” at the moment and are strongly rumoured to want to strengthen at the back. Fergie has fueled such rumours by considering sending defender Jonny Evans out on loan in the new year. Onuoha could be an excellent addition to SAF’s squad and may look to build on his career at Old Trafford.
However, Onuoha is currently contracted to local rivals Manchester City and this could prove to be a stumbling block for United. City may wish to reject any offer from United in a refusal to sell to their rivals.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce will be keen to make a good impression on the former England U-21 International as it is thought he is keen to secure his full signature come July.
Though, a host of good performances will certainly have turned the heads of many Premier League managers and may leave Onuoha will a host of options in the summer.
The 24-year-old defender is contracted at Eastlands until 2014, but City’s merry-go-round style in the transfer window could see Onuoha leave for as little as £3million. (Transfer Tavern)
Now, whilst Nedum Onuoha is seemingly surplus to requirements at Eastlands there seems little chance Roberto Mancini will allow the defender to leave to join a club they consider to be rivals. This is a similar situation as to Shay Given’s potential exit from the club that will apparently will not allow the keeper to join the likes of Arsenal.
Onuoha has been in fine form at Sunderland since he moved to the Stadium of Light on loan and Steve Bruce will be keen to snap up the 24 year old on a permanent deal. It seems unlikely that Sir Alex Ferguson would consider a move for the former England Under 21 international, knowing that in all likelihood any move from Old Trafford would be turned down flat.
There are a number of players Roberto Mancini will be looking to offload in January as he looks to trim costs but a move to Sunderland seems far more likely for the talented battler.
