Andy Carroll yesterday handed Newcastle an early Christmas present by pledging his future to the club.
The striker insisted there’s no way he will be quitting Tyneside in January – dashing the hopes of Premier League big guns desperate to lure the £15m-rated England striker away.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs have all been eyeing Carroll amid mounting speculation that he was ready to quit following the shock sacking of manager Chris Hughton last week.
But the Toon hitman, who bagged a spectacular late strike in the 3-1 win over Liverpool at the weekend, said he was determined to keep it business as usual under new boss Alan Pardew
“I’m just going to go out there and carry on doing what I’ve been doing so far this season,” he said.
“I’ve always worked towards being where I am now, and want to stay here – it’s as simple as that.”
Pardew insisted 21-year-old Carroll, who has hit 32 goals in 58 starts for the club since 2006, can look forward to a glittering career if he stays on the straight and narrow.
“Andy is an outstanding young player who has got a hell of a future over the next 10 or 15 years as long as he manages to keep himself sane in the mad world he’ is now in,” Pardew said. (Daily Mirror)
Andy Carroll has proven himself this season to not just be a prolific goalscorer in the Championship, but also a fine Premier League striker.
Though there have been front page headlines he will not be proud of, he has ten goals already this season in the English top flight – as well as a first cap for his country.
His performance against Liverpool was especially good, as Carroll won 17 of the 20 challenges he contested throughout – including 16 of 18 in the air- and scored a wonderful low shot from 25 yards late on.
It is no surprise that Carroll has been linked with some bigger clubs, but he looks set to continue to set St James’ Park alight for the foreseeable future.
