Roberto Mancini is to meet with Carlos Tevez on Friday when he will try to persuade the striker not to leave Manchester City.
Tevez has made it clear that he wants to move on even though City turned down his transfer request over the weekend, saying relationships with ‘certain executives’ have broken down beyond repair.
Speculation surrounding the Argentine’s future has dominated the news in recent days and overshadowed City’s preparations for their Europa League game away to Juventus on Thursday.
Questions about Tevez dominated Mancini’spre-match press conference despite the fact that Tevez has not travelled with the rest of the squad to Turin.
The 26-year-old returned to training in England earlier this week following a short break in Tenerife and Mancini admitted he had yet to hold talks with the player.
The Italian tactician expects to find out more on Friday and remains hopeful that Tevez will stay at Eastlands.
“I haven’t spoken to him yet. He is our player and I hope he continues to play for us and score for us,” said Mancini.
“I will speak with him on Friday.”
Mancini confessed that Tevez’s transfer request had come as a surprise to him, at a time when the club find themselves in third place in the Premier League.
“I am disappointed because we are in a good moment and in a good position in the table and our focus must be on this,” he said.
“I want to speak to him. Carlos has three-and-a-half years left on his contract.”
Asked whether he thought he could change the player’s mind, Mancini said: “I don’t know, I don’t know. Carlos is our player and will stay with us.
“It is important we speak. We have important games coming up against Juventus tomorrow and against Everton on Monday and lots of (other) important games this month.
“I speak with him a lot – we spoke only last week.”
Mancini joked: “I hope he continues to be unhappy if he is scoring goals like this.” (Sky Sports)
The joke that Roberto Mancini made may not go down that well with Argentine striker Carlos Tevez as it may imply that the Man City boss has a hard time believing that the in form goalscorer is in fact unhappy and that perhaps he is just ‘doing a Rooney’ and looking to get an even bigger pay packet.
Indeed Tevez has done well this season given the myriad of speculative reasons as to why he wants to leave the club. The 26 year old has scored ten goals in 15 Premier League games this season and if indeed he does attempt to leave and Man City elect to sell him, then they will be looking for a very large pile of cash for his services.
