Roy Hodgson is making a surprise bid to sign Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge in a bid to save Liverpool’s season – and his own job.
Kop boss Hodgson wants to take the England Under-21 international on loan with a view to a £5million transfer and will open talks with the Double winners to push the move through for the start of the window.
Sturridge has yet to stake a place in the Chelsea starting line-up and could be interested in the chance of a game at the Kop – where Hodgson wants a new attacker to give Fernando Torres help and the occasional rest.
The talented youngster, 21, joined Chelsea 18 months ago from Manchester City when his contract expired but he has been left on the fringes at Stamford Bridge.
But Hodgson knows him well and thinks his kind of versatility – he can play through the middle or supporting the main striker – is just what he wants.
The fact Liverpool would like him on loan first – with a chance to buy if he does well – also adds fuel to the suggestion under-fire Hodgson needs to turn things round for his own sake. (Sunday People)
On the face of it this looks like quite a sensible move from Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson who is urgently looking for new attacking options to boost his wayward Anfield side. However Chelsea signed the 21 year old a year and a half ago and may well feel that the former Man City man is still very much part of the club’s future, in which case they will be unlikely to sell Sturridge any time soon, although a loan deal may appeal to Carlo Ancelotti as he seeks to give Sturridge the last of top level football.
Thus far the Birmingham born striker has managed just two Premier League starts but has been fairly successful when selected in cup competitions. A lot could well depend on Sturridge himself who may be happy to fight longer for a lengthy run in the first team, which seems a distinct possibility given that those ahead of him, Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba, are both moving towards the end of their glittering careers and perhaps with that in mind Ancelotti may try the England Under 21 international more regularly as he still has not really been given a chance to prove himself at the highest level.
Liverpool have managed just 21 goals in 17 Premier League games thus far this season and Hodgson has been linked with many potential striking purchases and the boss himself has stated his desire to sign five or six new players to help improve his decidedly average squad.
