PARIS (AP)—Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry are the only players from the France squad that lost in the first round of the World Cup yet to agree to give up their tournament bonuses.
Their teammates all have signed a document from the French soccer federation stipulating that the players will forgo the bonuses totaling around $4 million.
Communications director Francois Manardo told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the federation has not heard from Anelka or Henry and does not know “whether they will sign.”
The Liberation newspaper claimed that Anelka was refusing to sign after being suspended for 18 games following his clash with former coach Raymond Domenech at the World Cup.
The report said Henry is showing his discontent at being used as a substitute in South Africa. (AP)
Now before anyone starts shouting blue murder at their monitors, especially those among you who are French, it is worth noting that Nicolas Anelka has stated that he will take his bonus and give it to a charity of his choosing, which seems fine. Thierry Henry is probably wondering why he needs to give his bonus away seeing as Raymond “Everyone Hates Me and I Don’t Care” Domenech was stupid enough to only play the former Arsenal and Barcelona star for 53 minutes coming off the bench.
Now clearly this is something the French Football Federation wants to put to bed but like a bad nightmare it seems to continually come back to bite them in the posteriors.
