Liverpool enter race to sign Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko but fear Manchester City’s spending power
Liverpool are trying to put a deal together to sign Edin Dzeko, the Wolfsburg striker, but fear they will not be able to match Manchester City’s spending power.
The Bosnia striker, 24, has a €40million (£34 million) release clause in his contract, which expires in 2013, and Wolfsburg hope that City’s interest will help them receive a figure as close to that as possible.
Wolfsburg had hoped to keep Dzeko until the summer but after a poor start to the season under Steve McClaren — they are 13th in the Bundesliga and out of the cup — they are prepared to let their star player go. Wolfsburg, who won the title in 2009 with Dzeko as top scorer, are open to Liverpool’s suggestion of taking players in part-exchange, with Ryan Babel and Daniel Agger the German club’s preferred options. Given that Edin Dzeko sent a personal letter to Man City stating his desire to play for the Eastlands club a move by Liverpool for the Wolfsburg striker may be academic, however Steve McClaren may well be tempted by the offer of players over wads of cash but the former ‘Wally with a Brolly’ may not be around long enough at the Bundesliga club to have much of a say in the matter.
Roy Hodgson clearly likes the idea of a Dzeko/Torres strike partnership, who wouldn’t, but it does seem a bit of a stretch that the 24 year old Bosnian would go to all the effort of pushing for a move to Man City only to accept a deal with a struggling Liverpool side.
It seems very likely that Wolfsburg will lose their prized asset and they will do all they can to cash in as much as they can on a player who has been in immense form for the club through thick and mainly thin over the past three and a half seasons, during which time he has netted 85 goals in 138 appearances.
