Aston Villa are reportedly due to lodge a bid for Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner in the January transfer window.

The Denmark international has struggled to gain a starting place in Arsene Wenger’s team this season after missing the start of the campaign though injury and he is known to be frustrated at spending life on the bench. The 22-year-old has caught the attention of German giants Bayern Munich but with the Bundesliga club unlikely to do any major business in January the door is open for other clubs to make a move.

Villa are set to do just that with manager Gerard Houllier keen to bolster an underperforming squad. With John Carew out of favour and Emile Heskey infamously unreliable in front of goal, the need for a hitman is plain to see. Bendtner can be guilty of missing chances himself but is usually in the right place at the right time.

A bid of £10m should be enough to take the forward up the motorway from London to Birmingham. (Sportingo)

One player leaving Arsenal next month could be Mexican Carlos Vela.

He wants regular first team football and finds himself behind the likes of Marouane Chamkh, Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner in the pecking order.

Spanish cub Espanyol are keen and the asking price of 7.5 million is in their financial range. Villareal and Valencia are also monitoring the situation. (Daily Mirror)

Add to these two sources the speculation that Arsenal midfielder Denilson may well be considering his options after seemingly falling out of the first team picture and the much talked about return to Spain for out of sorts keeper Manuel Almunia and it looks like Arsene Wenger may be planning something of a clear out at the Emirates.

There are a number of players who have been on the periphery of a regular spot in the Arsenal first team who may now be wondering if staying at the north London club may well be holding back their careers. Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela may well both feel they are in this category.

The arrival of Marouane Chamakh has seen both those two strikers fall further down the pecking order and whilst they were both teenagers this was of course less of a problem but at 22 and 21 respectively the Dane and the Mexican may well be now looking at their options and there is no shortage of interest in their services.

Denilson is in a slightly different situation as he appeared last season to be a player who Wenger was looking to use regularly but the Brazilian has failed to make an impact this season and has made just three Premier League starts thus far. The likes of Wolfsburg and somewhat surprisingly Barcelona, are both apparently keen on snapping up the tigerish youngster.

Manuel Almunia seems the most likely to leave after it became abundantly clear that he has little or no future at Arsenal following a succession of blunders that made his place in the first team untenable and a move back to the La Liga in January is a distinct possibility.
