Per Mertesacker ‘subject of £8.5m Arsenal transfer bid’
Per Mertesacker is waiting to discover whether Werder Bremen will accept an £8.5 million transfer bid from Arsenal, according to a report.
The Germany centre-back was strongly linked with a move to The Emirates during the summer transfer window, but a deal never materialised and Arsene Wenger signed Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci instead.
Both of them have struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League and with Thomas Vermaelen still recovering from an Achilles injury, the Gunners boss is apparently keen to sign another central defender in January.
Wenger has been linked with Gary Cahill of Bolton Wanderers and Christopher Samba of Blackburn Rovers, but it now appears he has returned to an earlier target.
According to IMScouting, sources in Germany have revealed Werder Bremen have now received a bid from Arsenal for Mertesacker. (Metro)
Arsene Wenger has stated publicly his desire to sign a centre back to help beef up his defensive options and given that the north London side has managed to keep just four clean sheets in 18 Premier League matches one can see the where the Emirates boss is coming from.
Per Mertesacker has long since been an Arsenal target and Werder Bremen’s poor Bundesliga form has appeared to have brought the move to a head as the giant German international appears to be pushing for a move to the Premier League and therefore a Gunners bid appears to have been made.
Having lost William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikel Silvestre in the summer and Thomas Vermaelen to a long term injury, Wenger has had to trust his new signings to hold the fort and whilst both Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci have done quite well and Johan Djourou is fast improving, Arsenal still appear to need a strong influence at the back to help them end their five season long silverware drought.
