Arsenal and Manchester United have spoken to the father of Barcelona wonderkid Thiago Alcantara about a possible move to the Premier League.
Reports in the Catalan press claim that the two Premier League clubs have been in touch with former Brazil international Mazinho, father of Alcantara, for an update on his contract situation.
Born to Brazilian parents in Italy, midfielder Alcantara is a Spain Under-21 international and said to have a bright future at the Nou Camp.
The 19-year-old has impressed since making the step from Barcelona B to Pep Guardiola’s first-team, but there is still some confusion about a long-term deal at the club.
With his current contract reportedly set to expire on January 31, Alcantara has been waiting for some time to finalise fresh terms with the club. But Barca have seemingly been sluggish in offering Alcantara a new deal and Arsenal and United could be ready to pounce.
Any club that signs Thiago would have a head start in lining up a deal for his 17-year-old brother Rafael, 17, who also is a member of the Barcelona youth academy. Manchester City were linked with a deal for both talented brothers in December and the pair are reported to want to play together while they are still at such a young age. (talkSPORT)
Thiago Alcantara already has eight appearances for the Barcelona first team this season, but has found it difficult to break into a side featuring so many stellar talents.
He has been likened to Xavi and Iniesta in his style of play, but in addition is more of a dribbler.
Though he needs to learn when to use his box of tricks, when it works it is sublime.
His assist for Lionel Messi’s goal below in the rout of Ceuta in the Copa Del Rey this season shows his potential, and as a free transfer he would be excellent.
