Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing has topped Sunderland boss Steve Bruce’s wish list – by default, according to the Daily Mail.
With Manchester City unwilling to flog Adam Johnson and Wigan pricing Sunderland out of the market for Charles N’Zogbia, the Black Cats have turned their attention to Downing.
And with Niall Quinn eager to back Bruce in the transfer market, the club are looking to table a bid of around £12 million for the England winger.
However, with fellow creative spark Ashley Young also heavily linked with a move away from the Midlands this January, it is unclear whether Villa would have their heads turned by such an offer. (Goal.com)
Stewart Downing has arguably one of the few Aston Villa players this season to have impressed this term and one can understand why Steve Bruce would be interested in signing the former Middlesbrough man but Gerard Houllier will fight to keep the England international and given that the 26 year old only arrived at Villa Park 18 months ago he would probably be keen to stick it out at the struggling Midlands side.
Steve Bruce is looking to bring in quality signings to help boost the sides potential after seeing the Black Cats put in a series of good performances this season taking Sunderland to the fringes of a Europa League place and the Stadium of Light boss is keen to make the most of the season by looking to snap up a player or two.
Downing had a successful loan spell at Sunderland at the tail end of 2003 but I don’t see him looking to leave Aston Villa in January.
