Tottenham will make a move for Marseille playmaker Mathieu Valbuena if Luka Modric leaves the club.
Modric has been in superb form for Spurs this season as the Londoners emerged as the surprise package in the Champions League and have become genuine contenders in the title race. The Croatian’s displays have seen Chelsea declare their interest in a player they tried to sign prior to his £16.5m transfer to White Hart Lane in 2008. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has said that Modric is not available at any price but with greater riches on offer at Stamford Bridge the player could have his head turned by a move across London.
While Tottenham do not envisage that scenario materialising, they are preparing for the worst by making enquiries about Valbuena. The 26-year-old is entering the prime of his career and his performances this season have caught the eye. A smart finish for France against England at Wembley and a sensational swivelling strike in the Champions League against Spartak Moscow have been particular highlights and Tottenham believe he would be the right man to replace Modric should the unthinkable happen.
Chelsea bare yet to launch a formal bid for the player but with Frank Lampard entering the twilight of his career, Modric is being lined up as his successor. (Sportingo)
Harry Redknapp has no intention of selling Luka Modric and everyone knows that but perhaps it is worth looking into the possibility of bringing in yet more strength in depth and clearly the Tottenham boss loves dabbling in the transfer market and Mathieu Valbuena is a quality playmaker.
The Marseille man has been in fine form and may well be interested in a move to the Premier League after four and a half seasons at the Stade Velodome and the chance of such a move happening may be even more likely if Didier Deschamps fails to retain the French Ligue 1 title, something that may be tricky as they sit in fifth place after a decidedly average start to the season.
Redknapp will probably look to bring in a player or two in January but may opt to bring in more defensive cover over the addition of an attack minded midfielder.
