Arsene Wenger has today been linked with the signing of Villarreal’s goalkeeper Diego Lopez. The Gunners supremo is said to be wanted a top quality keeper to push ?ukasz Fabia?ski and Wojciech Szcz?sny to be number 1.
Lopez, 28, moved to El Submarino Amarillo from Real Madrid in 2007 and has gone on to become integral to Juan Carlos Garrido’s side. He has also appeared once for the Spanish national side in a friendly game against Macedonia.
There has yet to be any speculation on the player’s valuation but Villareal are likely to want to recoup much of the £5 million paid to Real. Arsenal are likely to use the money received for the sale of Manuel Almunia who has been told he can leave the Emirates in January. (Transfer Tavern)
Given that Lukasz Fabianski had wrestled the first team keeper role from Manuel Almunia’s dodgy grasp and has then gone on to put in some very good displays and taking into account the fact that fellow Polish international Wojciech Szcz?sny has been given a huge pay rise and a new contract, one would have thought that Arsene Wenger would not need further goalie options but this source believes the Gunners are lining up a surprise January move.
Diego Lopez is considered as the owner of one of the safest pair of hands in Spanish football and the 29 year old former Real Madrid has been a big success at Villarreal and has been instrumental in their great start to the campaign which has seen the Yellow Submarines sit in third place having conceded just 14 goals in 16 matches.
The Spanish international may well be tempted by the chance of a move to the Emirates as he may feel he has outgrown Villarreal.
