Liverpool are swooping for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young and Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross despite Roy Hodgson’s uncertain future.
According to the Sunday Mirror, the Reds’ new American owners, who have drafted in director of football and chief scout Damien Comolli, will rely on the Frenchman to make the moves this January and they will continue with their transfer plans whether or not Hodgson survives the managerial cull.
Comolli, the man famous for talent spotting the likes of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale during his stint at Spurs, has already identified Young as a potential signing and will compete with Manchester United for the £15million rated player.
Also high on Liverpool’s wish-list is Stoke centreback Shawcross but United could also usurp the deal as they have first option on the defender who joined the Potters from Old Traffrod.
The new Liverpool hierarchy are determined to recruit the best British talent coming through the ranks and their principle target is England Under-21 striker Daniel Sturridge, who has already told Chelsea he wants to join the Reds on loan after making a paltry two league starts in two seasons with the West Londoners. The significance of Joe Cole last minute tap in against Bolton can not be overstated, it seems to have quite literally saved Roy Hodgson’s job, albeit in the short term at least. This source believes that new owners NESV will hand the Liverpool boss a significant transfer fund injection and the players he has earmarked would indeed improve the decidedly average Anfield squad he has to play with, but can he persuade this trio to join the club?
Ashley Young has been the subject of much speculation and Aston Villa may be fighting a losing battle to keep the England international winger and Tottenham and Man United have both been linked with a move for the 25 year old who has just 18 months left on his current contract and apparently has no intention of signing a new one.
Ryan Shawcross is a no nonsense defender who could arguably take over from veteran Jamie Carragher and there is no doubt that the Stoke City centre back knows how to defend and his pairing with Robert Huth at the heart of the Britannia Stadium back line has been the basis of Tony Pulis’s defensively minded side.
Daniel Sturridge wants to leave Chelsea and some sources state that Anfield would be his preferred destination of choice if indeed Carlo Ancelotti chose to offload the England Under 21 international. The former Man City striker hasn’t had much of a look in since he arrived at Stamford Bridge a year and a half ago.
This trio of English talent would cost around £25-27m to secure and as all three are young players with a great deal to offer then Liverpool owner John W Henry would probably be happy to finance such moves to help build for a positive future.
