SIR ALEX FERGUSON is planning a double raid on the north east.
The Manchester United boss is leading the chase to sign Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson and is keeping tabs on Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique.
England new boy Henderson, 20, is ready to pick United ahead of Manchester City because he thinks he has a better chance of first-team football.
He may end up in the middle of a bidding war, possibly during this transfer window but more likely in the summer.
And with left-back Patrice Evra stalling on a new United deal, Fergie is eyeing Spanish star Enrique, 24, as a potential replacement.
Evra’s contract expires at the end of next season and the French international continues to be linked with Real Madrid.
But, true to form, Ferguson is taking no chances and checked out Enrique in Toon’s 1-0 win at Wigan last Sunday.
Fergie’s pal Sam Allardyce signed him for Newcastle from Villarreal for £6.3million in August 2007.
Henderson has told pals that he thinks City, who have already made their interest clear, as People Sport revealed, may not be the right career move for him because he could struggle for a regular starting spot. He has seen Adam Johnson and James Milner struggle to break into the star-packed side and is aware life at City can be frustrating. (Sunday People)
Now it is clear to see that Sunderland youngster Jordan Henderson looks like the real deal, a player with a great deal of potential who Steve Bruce will struggle to keep hold of after the England international’s meteoric rise over the past 18 months, but would Sir Alex Ferguson really see Newcastle United full back Jose Enrique as a potential replacement for Patrice Evra?
The Spaniard has always appeared average at best, a player with a decent amount of ability but a left back who finds it hard to find the middle ground between attack and defence and a player who is often caught out postionally.
There have been rumours that French international Evra is looking to leave Old Trafford and the likes of Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the 29 year old but Ferguson will fight long and hard to keep hold of a player who is a crucial part of how the Premier League leaders play.
The chances of Enrique moving to Man United are slim to none, we are after all talking about a 24 year old who is still without a full international cap, a move for Black Cat Henderson is however wholly possible and some see the 20 year old as a good long term replacement for Michael Carrick, although it is worth noting that Carrick has been in excellent form over the past month or so.
