Arsenal appear to be honing in on a January move for West Ham United defender Matthew Upson.
Manager Arsene Wenger is in the market for a new centre-back with Premier League experience to solve his current defensive crisis and the Independent understands that a move for Upson is under consideration.
Arsenal’s backline are reeling from the double loss of Thomas Vermaelen with a troublesome Achilles problem and Sebastien Squillaci with a hamstring strain.
However, Wenger has stressed he will not make any panic buys as cover for Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou. The Frenchman will only consider a bid for a player already “adapted to English football” which leaves Upson, a former Arsenal defender, in contention for a move.
The Independent reports that the 31-year-old is out of contract at West Ham in the summer and will not sign another deal. (ESPN)
Arsene Wenger is indeed on the look out for defensive reinforcements and may opt for a short term solution but is he really looking to bring back a player he offloaded almost eight years ago? The England international is a fairly solid centre back but it is worth noting that he is part of a defence that has conceded more than any other in the Premier League this season.
However the Arsenal boss could reportedly snap up the Hammers star for around £3.5m as his contract is up in the summer, however it would take a lot of persuading to make West Ham boss Avram Grant to sell such a crucial player in the middle of a relegation dogfight.
Wenger has also been linked with the likes of Sol Campbell, Per Mertesacker, Gary Cahill, Neven Subotic and a host of other centre backs as the Gunners boss frantically searches for another defender this month to help boost his back line as the north London club continues to fight on many fronts as they look to end a five seasons long silverware drought.
