Arsenal will follow up their interest in Ipswich forward Connor Wickham but will wait until the end of the season to make their move.
Wickham impressed for Ipswich Town in their shock 1-0 win over the Premier League club in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi final with the youngster by no means overawed by the occasion. Instead the 17-year-old flourished in his role on the left flank from where he gave Emmanuel Eboue the run around and also cut in several times to either strike at goal or feed team mates Tamas Priskin and David Norris.
The Gunners have been monitoring Wickham’s progress for the past 12 months and have been mulling over when to make their move as they balance the advantages between regular first team football with Ipswich in the Championship against developing with more technical players under the Arsenal ethos but with less competitive game time. Last night was the perfect showcase for Connor Wickham to prove to Arsenal just what he is capable of and the young striker put in a quality performance that has apparently proven to Arsene Wenger that he must follow up his interest in the Ipswich Town man this summer.
Some sources have speculated that the North London club would secure a deal in January for around £10m and then immediately loan him back to the Portman Road side for the rest of the season, a deal that would clearly please Paul Jewell as the money would come in handy as the new Tractor Boys boss can then look to bring in useful additions to help get his side back up the table.
It has been claimed that Arsenal are now certain to make a bid for the England Under 21 international and a number of other Premier League sides are set to do so also.
