Rumours are rife that Tottenham Hotspur have had a bid accepted for Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll after a flurry of bets backing the move.
Bookies reacted quickly, and have slashed the odds across the board. The England man is now just 6/4 to join Spurs before the end of the January transfer window on SkyBet.
With Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp hoping to generate funds from the sale of Robbie Keane, and having succeeded in removing David Bentley from the wage bill, he now feels he is in a good position to secure the signing of his primary transfer target.
His squad at White Hart Lane is missing little, but a striker who can play on his own up front is a top priority – and Carroll is prolific too.
He is the Premier League’s third top goalscorer with eleven goals, and his six assists also indicate he is able to bring others into play.
It is this ability that is Peter Crouch’s biggest positive for Spurs this season, as the lanky striker has eight Premier League assists himself, but he not been in good goalscoring form domestically.
Crouch has just one Premier League goal this season – but more impressively six in the UEFA Champions League.
If Andy Carroll can strike up a similar partnership with Rafael Van Der Vaart or Jermain Defoe though, then Crouch’s days at White Hart Lane could be numbered.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is believed to have chosen Cardiff forward Jay Bothroyd as Carroll’s replacement.
