Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has hinted that the Catalan giants will make a move for Cesc Fabregas in the summer.
The current Primera Liga frontrunners have tried in vain to sign the Arsenal midfielder in recent years in a bid to bring the 23-year-old back to Spain.
Former Barcelona president Joan Laportawas frustrated at a lack of progress in the deal, as was Rosell in the summer.
Fabregas was part of the youth set-up at Camp Nou but has flourished into one of the world’s top players under Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.
When asked about a renewed bid for the Spanish international in the summer, Rosell refused to rule out another big-money bid.
“Will we sign Cesc this summer? I’ll tell you in June,” said Rosell. (Sky Sports)
Now whilst clearly Barcelona have made more references than it is physically possible to count of their intention to re-sign their former youth team player Cesc Fabregas, for some reason this latest one just appears to be the most blatant to date. It almost smacks of over confidence and must surely be a blatant breaking of any anti ‘tapping-up’ code has.
The fact that a club president would address the issue of the signing of a contracted player of another club in such a manner is frankly par for the course but no less irritating and infuriating. To say “Will we sign Cesc this summer? I’ll tell you in June” is a rather blithe way of addressing a oft discussed issue.
To me there is a marked difference between someone stating their intention to make an offer for a player and stating that they will sign the player. It seems to basically imply that making a bid and signing a player are one and the same thing, as though Barcelona are a side that will do whatever they please.
Arsene Wenger registered a complaint against the Catalan giants last summer when Barcelona’s attempts to sign Cesc Fabregas became more and more desperate, and yet nothing it appears, was done.
Can I suggest that Wenger now makes as many references as possible to the fact that he will sign Leo Messi in the summer and that he then tells all his players to repeat the same manta in every pre/post-match interview they conduct.
