Chelsea look set to join Liverpool and Tottenham in the race to sign Aston Villa’s Ashley Young.
The 25-year-old has been the subject of interest from several Premier League clubs after he called off talks over a new contract at Villa Park in the autumn. Spurs were believed to be leading the chase for his signature but they are currently concentrating their efforts on signing Newcastle’s Andy Carroll while Liverpool are likely to wait until the summer before they make any sizeable outlay in the transfer market.
The Blues will move for Young after Florent Malouda’s alarming dip in form and with only Gael Kakuta remaining as an orthodox winger at the club there is a need for another wide man at Stamford Bridge. While a centre back is manager Carlo Ancelotti’s priority this month, he is keen to steal a march on his rivals and sign the talented England international.
Young is rated at around £20m. (Sportingo)
Ashley Young is steadfastly refusing to sign a new Aston Villa contract until the summer, by which time he will have just one year left on his current deal. This attitude would appear to suggest that the England international wants to take his time before agreeing to stay at the club he moved to almost four years ago. This will give interested parties all the incentive they need to put in offers for the 25 year old.
Carlo Ancelotti is looking for new attacking options and preferably ones who can reverse the ageing nature of the Stamford Bridge squad. The Italian is a fan of the Aston Villa man who has impressed a great deal in matches against the West London side.
Gerard Houllier will not want to lose such a crucial part of his side but given just how poorly Aston Villa are performing this season, and make no mistake they are now in a relegation battle, then it may be hard to convince the former Watford man to stay.
