Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is reportedly ready to step up his pursuit of Manchester United striker Michael Owen, with the Wearsiders boss preparing to raid his former club again.
Michael Owen has scored three goals in nine games for Manchester United this season
Owen has found first-team opportunities difficult to come by this season and has played just nine games in five-and-a-half months, but Bruce is ready to offer him more regular football at the Stadium of Light.
The Sunday Mirror have quoted a source close to Owen as saying: “This is not about money – Michael will get a fair contract but he is more interested in playing and scoring.”
Exactly where Owen would fit in at Sunderland is a bit of a mystery however, as Bruce has club-record signing Asamoah Gyan and prolific Premier League striker Darren Bent at his disposal.
But with both strikers currently struggling to find the net and Danny Welbeck used more often as a wide player, Bruce could be prepared to turn to Owen to solve his finishing problems. (ESPN)
Some sources have claimed that Steve Bruce would make a bid of around £2.5m to land the Manchester United striker this month knowing that come the end of the season the 31 year old would be available for nothing, leaving him open to many offers and therefore the Sunderland boss wants to seal any deal in January to avoid missing out on the former England man.
Bruce knows that he may struggle to convince Man United to sell Danny Wellbeck to the Stadium of Light club in the summer when his loan deal comes to an end, and with that in mind perhaps the Black Cats boss is looking to bring in another attacking option.
Clearly Michael Owen is in the latter stages of his career but if he can steer clear of injuries, clearly a very big IF, then he could well be a useful player to have around. Although Sunderland are having a great season thus far they are struggling of late to convert scoring chances. Darren Bent has scored just one goal in his last seven Premier League appearances, after a bright start Amamoah Gyan has also seen his tally dry up with one in the last eight.
If Bruce wants to continue to push onward towards a top six finish then perhaps the injection of another striker would be a good move.
