Sunderland centre forward Darren Bent has submitted a formal transfer request to the North East side, after an £18 million bid was made by fellow Premier League outfit Aston Villa.
Since joining Sunderland from Tottenham for £10 million eighteen months ago, Bent has notched up 36 goals in 63 appearances for the Black Cats. However, he has asked to leave the Stadium of Light and Sunderland have accepted his transfer request.
A club statement read: “The club can confirm that it received a written transfer request from Darren Bent following yesterday’s Wear-Tyne derby match.”
Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier will look to assemble a side in the January transfer window that can get out of the relegation battle the Midlands side are currently staring into. With their goal tally of 22 goals in 24 games this season and top scorer being midfielder Stewart Downing with 5, it is evident that chairman Randy Lerner is happy to give Houllier the funds to fire Villa up to the table and attempt to finish in the top six for the fourth season in a row.
Sunderland will have to weigh up the Villa offer or wait for the reported £22 million bid that is being made by Chelsea for the England international striker. If Bent decides to leave, the pressure will be on Ghanaian international Asamoah Gyan and loanee Danny Welbeck to keep the goals for the Black Cats, unless Sunderland manager Steve Bruce uses the Bent money to get himself another top class striker.
