Manchester United have put Lyon left-back Michel Bastos on their list of possible targets to replace Patrice Evra.
Sportsmail revealed in December that United had made an enquiry for Benfica’s £25m-rated Fabio Coentrao, wary that Evra is destined for either Real Madrid or Barcelona in the summer.
They have also scouted Newcastle’s Jose Enrique who is being monitored by Bayern Munich. Bastos, 27, is a regular in the Brazil squad and was once a a target for Tottenham but Lyon now rate him at a costly £20m. (Daily Mail)
Sir Alex Ferguson is being linked with moves for an alarming number of left sided players, most left backs, and one wonders if either a) French international Patrice Evra is on his way to Spain or b) stories are being created ad infinitum on the off chance that one will eventually be accurate or c) a bit of both.
The three left backs listed by this source are all quality players who’s combined worth would be a whopping £55m, luckily Manchester United would probably only be looking to bring one of them to Old Trafford, but which one would suit them best?
Lyon’s Michel Bastos is a very attack minded player with a great deal of flair and the ability to score absolute screamers as well as being able to flight in quality set pieces. He wouldn’t come cheap though and perhaps a 27 may be a tad to old to take over from Evra, if indeed he is leaving, which we should stress is of course complete speculation at this point.
Fabio Coentrao is a player who appears to be heading for great things and may feel that in order to get to achieve greatness he may have to leave a Benfica side that has looked decidedly average of late. The Lisbon giants find themselves eight points behind leaders, and arch rivals, Porto and crashed out of the Champions League to boot. Again the Portuguese international will not come cheaply but at 22 he has a lot to offer.
Newcastle United left back Jose Enrique has been in fine form this season and his link up play with Jonas Gutierrez has been a joy to watch. Clearly the Spaniard would upset many Magpies fans if he opted for a move to Manchester United but he does appear to be a Ferguson target so who know’s if this move would transpire.
