Robbie Keane yesterday branded Birmingham’s failed £6million bid to buy him a publicity stunt.
The Tottenham striker expressed his bemusement at a statement released by Birmingham chief executive Peter Pannu that explained why the deal had fallen through.
Keane was surprised to see the Midlands club allege that his wage demands were out of their financial range.
‘It was never going to happen,’ said Keane, who also insisted he knew nothing about reports linking him to West Ham.
‘We will have to see what happens,’ he added.
‘There are still a couple of weeks left. Nothing has been sorted on my future.
‘But that Birmingham thing was never on in the first place. And that statement from them I find bizarre, to be honest with you.
‘Apart from the fact that a deal was never really on the table, I think they were just looking for some publicity.’ (Daily Mail)
This is strange. Not sure what Birmingham City would hope to prove by stating that Robbie Keane turned them down, maybe it would have been better to just not mention it at all and hope that it all went away. This is similar to the manner in which Blackburn Rovers acted over their interest in Brazilian legend Ronaldinho.
The Ewood Park stated very publicly they have made a bid for the AC Milan man and even named the price they have offered for his services but then it turned out that the Italian giants had not received any such bid, making the new Blackburn Rovers owners look very silly indeed.
Perhaps Birmingham City did not want to admit that the 30 year old Irishman was simply not interested in signing for them, and so then used wage demands as an excuse to cover up the fact the Tottenham man was simply not interested in a move to St Andrews.
