Liverpool have identified two young Premier League performers who they intend to make moves for either this month or in the summer as they look to rebuild an Anfield squad that is seemingly in need of an overhaul. The Anfield club have earmarked moves for Wolves winger Matt Jarvis and Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham.
Kenny Dalglish and the club’s Director of Football Damien Comolli are looking at cost effective options in the transfer window that adhere to Fenway Sports Groups long term plans and as such they are looking for good up and coming talent, preferable of English background due to the home-grown ruling and in that respect these two fit the bill very nicely.
24 year old winger Jarvis has had a good season and a half, his first in the Premier League after four seasons with Gillingham and two with Wolves in the Championship, and whilst the pint sized wide man would not be considered a spectacular signing there is no doubting his potential and a number of top sides are said to be tracking the Middlesbrough born youngster who was of course part of Fabio Capello’s original 30 man squad for the World Cup so is clearly someone who is rated highly.
Teenage striker Connor Wickham has been linked heavily with a move to Arsenal but no offer as yet has been forthcoming from the North London club and he is very much a player that Liverpool would like to sign and a lot would depend on just how much Ipswich Town are hoping to get from selling their prized asset, something that seems inevitable and is more likely to occur in the summer as he is still very much needed at Portman Road this season as the Tractor Boys look to steer clear of the drop after a poor run of form.
The pair would probably cost Liverpool in the region of £16m in total but what is hugely important is the possible resale value which will make such moves in the transfer market more palatable to the club’s board. There appears to be a certain amount of realism to these targets which may seem more likely to occur than any ‘big-name’ signings who may wait to see how the club progresses over the next six months to a year before taking the perceived gamble of a move to a club who is very much now in a period of transition.
