Gary Cahill given go ahead for Arsenal transfer as Bolton sign David Wheater
Gary Cahill is one step closer to becoming an Arsenal player after Bolton completed his replacement preparations by signing young defender David Wheater from Middlesbrough.
Speculation suggests Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen on no-nonsense defender Cahill and has indicated the 25-year-old would be a perfect addition to his threadbare squad, which has been depleted by injuries to Sebastian Squillaci and Thomas Vermaelen.
Bolton head coach Owen Coyle had previously valued the one-cap England international at £17m but Cahill could leave the Reebok Stadium for an initial fee of £10m plus add-ons.
Coyle was initial loathed to lose his highly-rated starlet – but with an additional name in the squad and the need to make inroads into the club’s £100million debts, he could be offered to the Gunners this month.
Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle has stated repeatedly that the signing of David Wheater from Middlesbrough has no relevance to the ongoing Arsenal pursuit of centre back Gary Cahill but that is a little hard to believe. This source believes the two teams are battling it out behind the scenes to get to a price that both sides is a fair one for the England international and that price appears to be £15, albeit some of that fee is payable in increments based on appearances.
Coyle’s argument that signing Wheater will not spell a Cahill exit is even harder to accept given that thus far the Reebok Stadium side has pretty much stayed faithful to a Zat Knight-Gary Cahill centre back partnership and the signing of the Boro defender would make little sense unless a departure was planned.
The signing of 23 year old Wheater would surely not just be as back up as there would be little use in the Redcar born battler leaving the Riverside just so he could warm the bench. It will be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger does finally get his man and clearly the capture of the former England Under 21 international would only make the chances of such a move happening more likely.
