Peter Crouch and Darren Bent partnership ‘considered by Aston Villa’
Spurs forward Peter Crouch has been linked with a move to Aston Villa as a strike partner for new signing Darren Bent.
Crouch played under Graham Taylor’s Villa for two seasons and has three years left to run on his Spurs contract. The 29-year-old has featured intermittently playing a cameo role for Harry Redknapp off the bench.
The departure of John Carew to Stoke City, after he passed his medical on Friday, has current manager Gerard Houllier searching for a fresh face to line-up alongside new signing Darren Bent.
Bent’s departure from Sunderland has also resulted in the Black Cats now offering Stoke £3 million for Ricardo Fuller.
A Crouch-Bent partnership could be the catalyst Villa needs to revive their season with the 6ft 7in striker believed to carry a price tag of £10.5 million.
Crouch has scored just once in the Premier League this season after making 22 appearances, but it’s his European form which will have Houllier interested.
Crouch has netted six times and has played in all seven of Spurs’ Champions League matches.
Displaying sparkling form against Young Boys in the play-offs, Crouch’s hat-trick sealed Tottenham’s place in the group stage.
Given that between them Gabriel Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey and John Carew (now on loan at Stoke City) have managed just three Premier League goals in a collective 25 Premier League starts it would seem that Darren Bent could do with a strike partner who knows where the back of the net is and Peter Crouch may well be the ideal man for the job.
Whilst the giant England international has similarly struggled to find the net in domestic football this season he would still surely be a good foil for Darren Bent and he would appear to be available to buy if the price is right as Harry Redknapp appears keen to reshuffle his attacking pack and have been linked with moves to bring in a new striker himself and could use the funds from any sale to Villa to reinvest.
