Arsenal sent a scout to Hearts’ meeting with Rangers yesterday, with the north London club understood to be monitoring the form of Allan McGregor.
Aston Villa, Manchester United and Sevilla have all been linked with McGregor, the Rangers goalkeeper who is expected to generate a transfer fee of about £5m if, as is likely, he departs Ibrox at the end of the season. Madjid Bougherra, the Rangers defender who has been linked with Arsenal in the past, also played in Hearts’ 1-0 win at Tynecastle.
McGregor, who turns 29 this month, was a virtual spectator despite his team’s defeat. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal’s scouts continue to study him as they look to solve what has proved a troublesome position for Arsène Wenger. McGregor’s age may count against him, with Wenger generally in favour of signing younger players.
Amid all the talk of Arsene Wenger frantically searching for another centre back did people forget that the Arsenal boss was also very much looking for a new keeper, well at least he was looking for one in the summer and presumably may still want to bring one to the Emirates this month?
The Gunners number one at the beginning of the season was of course Manuel Almunia but yet more clangers appear to have spelt the end of his Arsenal career but Lukasz Fabianski has however improved greatly from the fumbler of last season however remember just how hard Wenger was chasing Fulham veteran Mark Schwarzer back in August, so perhaps he still wants to sign someone he can trust between the sticks?
Allan McGregor has been at Ibrox since he was 16 and may be keen on a new challenge and the Scottish international has shown his ability over the past five seasons as a virtual ever present at Rangers to suggest that he could well make the move down south with aplomb.
Walter Smith will be loathed to lose the Edinburgh born keeper but he is unlikely to stand in his way if indeed an offer came in and McGregor was tempted.
Arsenal do of course also have up and coming keepers Vito Mannone and Wojciech Szczesny so one wonders if indeed the North London club even needs another keeper?
