With Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor on the verge of a move to Real Madrid , Arsenal have reportedly stepped up the chase for Real’s out-of-favour forward Karim Benzema .
According to sources cited by the German 4-4-2 Web site, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger even phoned the French striker in an attempt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are said to be lining up a loan move for the 23-year-old, who is currently also attracting heavy interest from Liverpool, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
Benzema scored last weekend as Real Madrid beat Malloca 1-0, and found the net again yesterday as Los Blancos sank Sevilla in the Copa del Rey. But the Frenchman has failed to win the trust of coach Jose Mourinho, who opted to look elsewhere for a replacement for the injured Gonzalo Higuain.
Now this does seem a bit of a stretch with the main reason being that it would make no sense for Real Madrid to loan out Karim Benzema the moment they brought in Emmanuel Adebayor as the whole point in bringing the Man City man was to give Jose Mourinho options up front and clearly if they offloaded the French international they would be back at square one.
Arsenal also probably do not need another striking option, not least because Robin Van Persie is seemingly back to his best and with Marouane Chamakh waiting in the wings with the likes Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela as back up, would the North London side need another attacking option, probably not.
There is no doubt that top of Arsene Wenger’s wish-list is a centre back and the chances of a move to bring in Benzema are slim to none. The £22m rated former Lyon man has not been in prolific form this term as he has been a first team regular following the injury sustained by first choice starter Gonzalo Higuain, and this has led to Jose Mourinho’s move to bring in Emmanuel Adebayor on loan.
