Sport.co.uk understands that Ajax defender Gregory Van der Wiel could leave the club in the January transfer window however the final decision lies with the Dutch giants and their decision on whether they sell Luis Suarez to Liverpool.
Van der Wiel has been monitored by Manchester United, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City; however the Red Devils and Spanish giants are reportedly the frontrunners in the race for the Dutchman.
The player still has a lengthy contract at the Amsterdam Arena and despite financial difficulties the club do not want to lose all their star names, with Urby Emanuelson having Joined AC Milan and Liverpool in negotiations regarding the signing of Luis Suarez.
“Anything can happen at the moment.” Hakim Slimani told Sport.co.uk
“I think if one of the clubs want him, he would have to think about it. The main thing is that Ajax will have to make a decision about that.
“But at the moment nothing is concrete, there is no offer on the table. He still has a contract for 5 years, so it all depends on Ajax and whether they are willing to let him go, and whether Luis Suarez joins Liverpool.
Ajax are in dire financial staits but do not want to sell two big names this month and therefore it seems that Sir Alex Ferguson hopes that Liverpool’s persistent pursuit of Luis Suarez fails to bear fruit so that his Old Trafford side can steal in and sign Dutch international Gregory Van der Wiel.
The Eredivisie side have reportedly given the Merseyside club three days to come up with the right fee for Uruguayan internatonal Suarez but it seems that Liverpool are about to admit defeat which would increase the chances of Van der Wiel being snapped up by Man United.
The talented right back was an integral part of the Holland side that made it to the World Cup Final last summer and he has been touted as a target of a number of clubs but it appears that Sir Alex Ferguson’s main competitors in the chase are Barcelona.
