Arsenal are ready to swoop for Barcelona misfit Javier Mascherano, despite manager Arsene Wenger’s claims that he is unlikely to make any major signings in the transfer window.
Mascherano only moved to Camp Nou last summer after a protracted saga with former club Liverpool who demanded and got a £22m transfer fee. However, the ongoing good form of Sergio Busquets has seen him struggle to start many matches with Barcelona and he has spent most of this season warming the substitutes bench.
To compound matters, as far as the Argentina international is concerned, his rival Busquets has just resolved a contract dispute with the club and is now tied down to a long-term deal. Arsenal are hoping to take advantage of the situation by offering Mascherano an escape route back to the Premier League. With Barcelona no in the healthiest financial position and keen to recoup some funds through transfer fees and lowering the wage bill, the Gunners will attempt to take the 26-year-old on loan with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.
With Arsenal sensing a real chance of ending their seven-year title drought, Wenger will push his board to complete the deal before Monday’s deadline.
As unlikely as it sounds, Javier Mascherano has been linked with a loan move to Arsenal in various media outlets for around the last six weeks.
Could there be something in it?
The Argentine midfielder has not adapted to Barcelona’s style of play as readily as the Catalan club’s manager Pep Guardiola hoped, and has found himself often benched in favour of home favourite Sergio Busquets.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger would be unlikely to sanction a big money bid for Mascherano, but if the 26 year-old is available on loan, he would prove a valuable asset for the Gunners.
