Everton have made a late move to challenge Bolton and Valencia in the race to sign Arsenal star Carlos Vela on loan, Goal.com UK can reveal.
Toffees manager David Moyes wants to add a goalscorer to his squad and has made contact with Arsenal over a move for the Mexico international.
Vela had been widely expected to join Spanish side Valencia until the summer but he has been advised by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to remain in the Premier League so the Frenchman can track his development.
“Personally, I wish [he would go to a Premier League club] because he’s a great player and it will be easier for me to follow his progress,” said Wenger on Tuesday. “Hopefully we can find a good solution for him in England.”
Everton turned their attention to Vela, 21, after top target Dieumerci Mbokani chose to join Wolfsburg on loan from Monaco.
It seems likely Carlos Vela will be on his way out of the Emirates either on loan or permanently this month and now Everton are interested in the £6m rated youngster. A move to Goodison Park may well suit all parties best as Arsene Wenger was keen for the Mexican to stay nearby so that his progress could be better monitored.
David Moyes will no doubt be keen on bringing the talented youngster on loan as they could well struggle to make a cash offer for the Gunners star and the Toffees boss is looking to bring in some talent this month to help steer the Merseyside club away from the drop zone.
Vela hasn’t started a Premier League match this season and seems no nearer to getting a run in the first team than any of the last couple of seasons and with Robin Van Persie getting back to his best form and with Marouane Chamakh waiting patiently to step into the breach if the Dutchman suffers his usual injury scare.
