Manchester United have added Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Rui Patricio to their list of potential targets to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar.
United have been closely watching the 22-year-old Portuguese international in recent weeks after recommendations from Carlos Queiroz.
Arsenal and Chelsea have also been following him, but United would be favourites should they opt to sign him as they have a co-operation agreement with Sporting which has seen them sign Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.
Patricio made his one and only appearance so far for Portugal in last November’s 4-0 friendly win over Spain.

Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele has recently been quoted as saying the club are looking for a new goalkeeper after Edwin Van Der Sar confirmed his retirement at the end of the season, and the Red Devils look unlikely to promote from within.
“We could do it internally, but we have looked at the best targets and we now have a nice one, two and three who we think can fill the job,” said Steele.
That has naturally led to speculation about who the three names on Man Utd’s shortlist are, and the Daily Mail is convinced that it is Portugal goalkeeper Pedro Rui Patricio.
A recommendation from former United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz would certainly be listened to by Sir Alex Ferguson, as he has aided successful moves before, and the club have strong ties with Sporting Lisbon.
Is Patricio ready to step up to become the number 1 at one of Europe’s biggest clubs?
