Liverpool are reportedly preparing a move to sign FC Utrecht striker Ricky Van Wolfswinkel in a bid thought to be in the region of £14m. The Anfield side is hoping to persuade disaffected Spanish international Fernando Torres to stay at the club but are readying a move for the Dutch international in case they find themselves losing their prized striking asset.
22 year old Wolfswinkel has been in fine form this season and has been linked with a move to Liverpool long before Roy Hodgson was axed and Damien Comolli rates the former Vitesse front man who has netted 19 times this term in all competitions.
The Merseyside club have of course just signed Ajax striker Luis Suarez after a prolonged pursuit and they were hoping to pair the Uruguayan with Torres but may now have to adopt alternative plans should they feel that keeping an unhappy striker a counter productive move.
A number of European sides have been eyeing up Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, who is nearing full fitness following a shoulder injury, with the likes of Newcastle United, Valencia and Juventus all said to have been keen on the rangy young striker who’s fine performances this term helped the Utrecht man to secure his first senior Dutch international cap in August of last year.
Liverpool will of course have to move fast to complete any deal with the transfer window set to close tomorrow.
