Birmingham City are confident of completing the loan signing of the former Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins before the transfer window closes tonight. The Rubin Kazan player flew into England yesterday to finalise terms – with a view to a permanent move to St Andrews in the summer – before undergoing a medical today.
City have also obtained a new work permit for the Nigerian international. Martins already had a permit but it was null and void as he left this country to join Wolfsburg from the Magpies 18 months ago.
The Birmingham manager, Alex McLeish, has been desperate to bring in a new striker throughout January. He has already failed in attempts to sign Robbie Keane from Tottenham Hotspur and Kenny Miller from Rangers.
Alex McLeish appears to be getting a raft of good news today as he looks to beef up his faltering front line. Obafemi Martins looks set to clinch a loan move to St Andrews’ after getting a work permit sorted out. The former Newcastle United man has seen his career stutter somewhat following his Premier League exit with moves to Wolfsburg and Rubin Kazan failing to really work out for the 26 year old.
In other news it seems that giant striker Nikola Zigic is not after all moving back to Racing Santander and that will be news that the Birmingham City boss will be glad to hear as he looks to pull his side away from the drop zone.
Goals have been few and far between for City who have netted just 21 Premier League goals this term, only Wigan have managed less.
