The word on the grapevine is that Liverpool are ready to up their bid for Newcastle United youngster Andy Carroll to £35m, the fee that the St James’ Park side are after for the England international, the moment that Fernando Torres agrees his £50m move to Chelsea.
Much has been made of the cancelling of an already delayed press conference at Newcastle United which has led many to believe that high level talks are occurring at the north-east club and the thinking is that the club’s owner Mike Ashley is ready to accept offers for their 22 year old striker and as such they are avoiding press contact until any such deal is agreed.
There have been conflicting reports that have stated that Liverpool striker Fernando Torres was on his way to Stamford Bridge to complete his move to the Premier League champions but it is now thought that the former Atletico Madrid man is trying to get a deal sorted out before travelling to Stamford Bridge for a medical before the January transfer window slams shut at 11pm.
Tottenham had previous bids for Carroll turned down according to many reports however the amount offered by Liverpool is a sizeable improvement on offers previously tabled and as such have caused much discussion at Newcastle United.
Anfield supporters will be aggrieved to lose Fernando Torres, a player who has achieved cult like status at the Merseyside club, but they would at least be buoyed by the immediate use of any funds from the sale to bring in reinforcements as Messrs Dalglish and Comolli attempt to salvage something from this season as well as planning for a brighter future.
