Newcastle have identified two targets who they hope will fill the shoes of outgoing Andy Carroll.
The 21-year-old target man is the subject of an extraordinary £35m bid from Liverpool who are attempting to sign the striker to offset the loss off Fernando Torres whop is on the verge of agreeing a £48m move to Chelsea. With 11 goals to his name this term Carroll will not be easy to replace but Magpies boss Alan Pardew has hastily scribbled down two names.
Johan Elmander is top of the list and probably the easiest to acquire in the short time frame. The Sweden international is out of contract in the summer and a bid of around £6m could be enough to prise him away from the Reebok before 11pm.
The other name is more complicated – Carlton Cole. The West Ham man has sen his stock dip in recent months but with a relegation battle to deal with his club will be reluctant to let him go. However, with Victor Obinna showing an eye for goal together with Frederic Piquionne’s performances, the arrival of new signing Demba Ba and the re-emergence of Freddie Sears they may decide to cash in if the price is right.
News that Andy Carroll is set to leave St James’ Park for Liverpool will not please Magpies fans and this source’s linking them to two very average strikers will not please them one iota. If Mike Ashley has decided to cash in on the club’s prized asset it will be scant consolation to hear that Alan Pardew is lining up moves for two strikers who do not appear to adequate replacements for the England international.
Swedish international Elmander is having a decent season but is still very much a hit and miss, quite literally, front man and whilst he could be snapped up quickly he doesn’t strike me as the type of signing to impress Newcastle United supporters and moves for the other of the striking pair linked by this source will not be much better.
Carlton Cole has been in and out of a struggling West Ham side is another player who is far from consistent and not likely to get Toon Army fan’s hearts racing. Newcastle United boss Pardew will be incensed if he has lost the services of 22 year old hotshot Carroll and even more so that the deal occurs a few hours before the transfer window slams shut, leaving him to scurry around on the off chance he can bring in some quality additions.
