Liverpool owner John W Henry has given a revealing interview with Fox Soccer Channel in which he discussed Kenny Dalglish’s prospects of becoming permanent manager, the club’s stadium plans, and Fernando Torres’ exit.
On Dalglish he was most effusive.
“It’s still early but in retrospect we couldn’t have made a better choice. It’s a great thing for the club, for Kenny and for us,” said Henry.
The American owners from Fenway Sports Group were not those who appointed Roy Hodgson in the first place, but clearly felt they had to give him a fair chance when they arrived.
In giving the job to Kenny Dalglish – at least on a temporary basis – they have shown that they listen to the fans, and so far the Scot has done nothing to indicate he should not be given the job permanently in the summer.
Henry was similarly praising of Anfield, and the famous Kop end.
The Kop is unrivalled,” he said.
“The atmosphere… I was really surprised because we’ve heard so much about needing a new stadium.
“We were surprised at how beautiful Anfield was – both viewing it as an empty stadium and then with the first game. It would be hard to replicate that feeling anywhere else.”
As for Torres, Henry was blunt, but ruthless.
“One of the things that we talked about from the very beginning was how important it was that everyone was on the same page. No player is bigger than the club.
“We expect players to want to be there. If they don’t want to be part of Liverpool Football Club then we should do everything we can to facilitate them going elsewhere.”
Torres’ heart clearly wasn’t in the Liverpool project any longer, and given the club gained a decent fee for his services – as well as two strikers – they can move on.
There is certainly enough happening at the club to concentrate on, and these are exciting times at Liverpool.
